The 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships concluded Sunday in Beech Mountain, North Carolina with the team relay and dual slalom events.
With a time of 14:50.73, Andrew Dillman, Allie Dragoo, Joshua Johnson, and Coryn Rivera helped Marian University beat Fort Lewis College and Lees-McRae College in the team relay.
“It was fun because racing is almost over and it was good because it was only one lap,” Dillman said in a USA Cycling story. “We just knew to go out there and give it everything.”
In the men’s dual slalom, Lindsey Wilson College’s Joshua Patton and John Swanguen finished 1-2 ahead of Phil Cowan (Fort Lewis). Cowan’s teammate Brittany Clawson won the women’s race, with three riders from Marian behind her — Crystal Kalogris, Shayona Glynn, and Felicia Stancil.
Kerry Werner of Lees-McRae won the men’s individual omnium for the weekend, with Dillman and Cody Phillips (Lees-McRae) finishing second and third. Sofia Gomez Villafane (Fort Lewis) was the women’s champion ahead of Clawson and Linnea Dixson (University of Wyoming).
Fort Lewis was the team omnium champion, with Marian and Lees-McRae placing second and third.
Brevard College posted the fastest time of the day to win the Division II team relay. The foursome of Lewis Gaffney, Sarah Hill, Zachary Valdez, and Erica Zaveta finished in 14:47.72. Colorado Mesa University was second and Mars Hill University took third.
Brevard’s winning effort in the team relay led to the team omnium title as well, with Western State Colorado University in second and Colorado Mesa University placing third.
“We definitely had it in our sights ever since our first conference race and we just knew exactly what we had to do and we wanted to show everyone out there that it isn’t just about DI and DII. We wanted to be the fastest out here today,” Gaffney said. “I’ve always had a good start. Zach’s always been one of the strongest guys on the team so we knew we needed him midway through the race. Then the girls just filled in the gaps where needed and it was amazing to have them.”
In the men’s dual slalom, the Brevard duo of Daniel Ennis and Mac Banner placed first and second. Taking third was Robert Rimmer of Virginia Intermont College.
Essence Barton (California Lutheran University) was the women’s dual slalom champion, as she finished ahead of Coleen Pacurariu (U.S. Air Force Academy) and Christen Boyer (Colorado School of Mines).
Wesley Lamberson (Union College-KY) edged Rimmer and Timothy Jenkinson (Mars Hill) in the men’s omnium standings. On the women’s side, Zaveta rode to the title ahead of Barton and Hill.
