Katie Compton (Trek Cyclocross Collective) and Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) took the flowers on Saturday at the Lionhearts International, round two of both the Toyota Cincy3 Cyclocross Festival and the Cross After Dark series.
The race took place at Kingswood Park in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason.
The women’s contest saw Caroline Mani (Raleigh-Clement) crash out of the race in the first corner, leaving Compton and Katerina Nash (Luna) to battle for the victory, with Kaitlin Antonneau (Cannondale) and California Giant-Specialized teammates Meredith Miller and Elle Anderson chasing.
On the third lap, Nash fumbled on the railroad tie run-up at Heckle Hill. Compton pounced, opening a gap that she would extend to 25 seconds and hold to the finish. Nash hung on for second with Antonneau third at 2:18.
In men’s racing, Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) took the hole shot, but Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement) grabbed the early lead. Johnson bridged to him on the second lap, followed by Powers with Trebon in tow.
Johnson attacked through the start-finish going into lap five, and going into bell lap Trebon followed him. The Cannondale men went one-two, with Trebon taking the runner-up spot at 51 seconds.
That left the battle for third to Powers and Berden — their duel came down to a sprint out of a mucky corner and onto the pavement, where Powers nipped Berden for third, nearly a minute off the pace.
Racing continues Sunday at Harbin Park in Fairfield.
