PRAGUE (AFP) — Two-time world champion Zdenek Stybar remains undecided about its participation in the 2014 UCI Cyclocross World Championships, his coach, Stanislav Bambula, said Tuesday.
The worlds will take place Feb. 1-2 in Hoogerheide, Netherlands, only a handful of kilometers from Stybar’s home in Essen, Belgium.
Stybar, 28, crowned in 2010 and 2011, has since turned his focus to road cycling under the colors of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team.
“The main challenge for Zdenek is that he lives only six kilometers from the circuit where the world championships will take place,” said Mr. Bambula during a press conference. “The final decision belongs only to himself, according to the weather and other criteria.”
Bambula said that Stybar would make a final decision on his worlds participation 48 hours before the elite men’s race, which takes place Feb. 2.
Stybar returned for a brief schedule of races during the Kerstperiode in December and early January, mustering a string of podium finishes.
