Peter Goguen wins junior men’s 17-18 title

Peter Goguen (Race CF) won the junior men’s 17-18 race on Sunday at the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships.

Goguen blazed away early from the 58-rider field at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder, Colorado, followed by Maxx Chance (Clif Bar Development).

Battling a stiff wind on his own, Goguen nevertheless built a seven-second lead by the Belgian Stairs, which Chance bounced up a la Cal Giant’s Cody Kaiser in Saturday’s under-23 race. The rest of the race was already 12 seconds back as the two leaders roared past the backside of the pits.

Goguen’s advantage would only grow — going into bell lap he had 38 seconds on Chance, who likewise had a solid lock on second. Third would boil down to a battle between Austin Vincent (Race CF) and Ethan Reynolds (Hot Tubes).

The Race CF leader hit the line alone for the victory, high-fiving spectators at roadside, followed by Chance at 47 seconds. And on the final lap, Vincent finally managed to shed Reynolds for the bronze.

It’s unbelievable,” said Goguen. “To actually get a win — it’s just surreal. It’s simply amazing.”

Despite quickly building an advantage, Goguen always kept one eye open for Chance.

“He was the one I was most worried about,” he said. “He lives here and he’s used to the altitude. He was always right there, right in the rear-view mirror. I was always worried until I crossed the line.”

Likewise, Chance knew that Goguen was the rider to watch going in, and likely to take his best shot from the gun.

“I knew he was gonna do it,” said Chance. “I just hoped I was gonna be able to take advantage later.”
