Belgian champion Sven Nys (Crelan-AA Drink) bounced back from his runner-up finish at the world championships to consolidate his overall lead in the Bpost Bank Trofee series on Saturday, winning a three-up sprint at the Krawatencross in Lille.

The race was the penultimate event in the eight-race series, which concludes Feb. 23 with the Internationale Sluitingsprijs in Oostmalle.

With six laps remaining Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) was off the front, chased by Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) at a dozen seconds down, while Nys led a second pursuit with Lars van der Haar (Rabobank) and Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games).

But Albert and Pauwels faded from contention, and first Nys, then van der Haar caught up to Meeusen.

Going into bell lap the three were locked together, with Pauwels a distant fourth at 20 seconds and Albert out of the hunt at 46 seconds down.

Meeusen led early in the lap, then hung tight as Nys slipped past and kept hitting the gas. Van der Haar lost the wheel, but chased back on just in time to contest a three-up sprint.

Nys led it out and never looked back, while van der Haar overhauled a distraught Meeusen, who pounded his bars in frustration as he had to settle for third. Pauwels followed for fourth at 38 seconds with Albert fifth at 1:08.

Nys continues to lead the overall in the time-based series with Albert second at 4:05 and Meeusen third.

In women’s racing, Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) beat world champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank) and Helen Wyman (Kona Factory).

Wyman leads the women’s series with Cant second at 31 seconds and Nikki Harris (Telenet-Fidea) third at 1:11.
