A media helicopter crashed at the Vuelta a El Salvador on Friday, killing a radio journalist.
David Diaz, one of four people hired by a local station to cover the race, was on board the helicopter when it went down soon after taking off during the second stage of the race. Rescuers reached the aircraft but after taking Diaz to the hospital, he died of injuries sustained in the crash.
“We were told that the stage would be shortened by 15 kilometers and after all the finish line stayed where it had been,” RusVelo rider Olga Zabelinskaya, who finished second in the stage and kept her overall race lead, said in a team statement. “Then the information arrived that there was a media helicopter crash resulting in casualties. It came as a terrible shock to us, I’m just at a loss for words …”
RusVelo reacted to the incident in the statement: “RusVelo team would like to express our sincere condolences on the death of the colleague who lost his life in the accident.”
