NICE, France (AFP) — Sky’s Geraint Thomas on Sunday pulled out of the eighth and final stage of the Paris-Nice cycling race following a fall, his team said.

Thomas fell 5km from the finish of the seventh stage on Saturday, having been in second place.

The Welshman’s general classification hopes were literally left in tatters as he rallied to cross the line with his shirt hanging off his back, more than 7 minutes behind the stage winner.

“Thankfully nothing appears to be broken,” team doctor Richard Usher said. “Geraint’s got multiple bruises and abrasions.”

Sky added that Thomas might race in next Sunday’s Milano-Sanremo.

Colombian Carlos Betancur is in the Paris-Nice race leader’s yellow jersey, with the “Race to the Sun” due to conclude in Nice later Sunday.
