Mara Abbott (UnitedHealthcare) and Daniel Jaramillo (Jamis-Hagens Berman) took victories on the opening day of the Silver City Tour of the Gila Wednesday.

Abbott took the women’s stage 1 win ahead of Flavia Oliveira (FCS). Abby Mickey (Twenty16) was third in the 73-mile Silver City to Mogollon Road Race.

The former Giro Rosa winner attacked on the finish climb to leave the field and ride alone to the line. Oliveira followed 55 seconds later.

Jaramillo topped Jamis teammates Matt Cooke and Gregory Brenes in the men’s opener, which covered 92 miles en route to the 6.7-mile finish climb at Mogollon.

The men’s race was marked by a large crash that saw roughly half the field hit the pavement and 14 riders abandon. Two riders — Nicolas Masbourian and Derrick St. John (both Silber Pro Cycling) — were airlifted to a Tucson hospital for treatment.

Chris Butler was also transported to Tucson for evaluation of a knee injury.

The Tour of the Gila continues Thursday with the second stage Inner Loop Road Race, which starts and finishes at Fort Bayard. The women will race 75 miles and the men will race 76 miles.
