Hometown favorite Chris Jones (Virginia Commonwealth) was among the big winners on day 1 of the Captech USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships in Richmond, Virginia, Friday.
Jones won the Div. I individual time trial title over Grant Koontz (Texas A&M), but it was Div. II champion Erik Levinsohn (Yale) who registered the fastest time of the day, blazing the 31-kilometer course in 41:47.
The Fort Lewis College squad of Griffin Easter, Natan Cavalca, Dean Haas, and Zack Noonan took top honors in the Div. I team time trial, beating Marian University for the men’s national title.
Colorado Mesa University swept the men’s and women’s team events.
Jessica Prinner (Midwestern State University) and Jasmine Hansen (U.S. Air Force Academy) defended their individual titles in women’s Div. I and II, respectively.
The Marian team of Allie Dragoo, Emily Elbers, Corrie Karas, and Coryn Rivera defended its Div. I team time trial title.
The collegiate nationals continue Saturday in Richmond with the criteriums and close Sunday with an urban circuit race set to decide the individual and team omnium champions.
