COLLECCHIO, Italy (AFP) — Australian rider Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) pulled out of the Giro d’Italia before Wednesday’s 11th stage, his team announced.

The 23-year-old, who wore the leader’s pink jersey for six days before losing it to countryman Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) during stage 8, suffered a right thigh injury in a crash on Sunday.

Matthews, who won stage 6 of the race last week, still managed to place third in Tuesday’s stage 10 despite his injuries.

“Michael fought to get a result despite the pain,” Orica said in a statement. “What’s certain is he’s learned a lot from this Giro.”
