Alessandro De Marchi has signed with BMC Racing Team, the squad announced Saturday.

The 28-year-old Italian, a fourth-year pro, earned the combativity award during the 2014 Tour de France after taking part in breakaways during stages 13 and 14 while riding for Cannondale.

De Marchi’s palmares include winning the king of the mountains classification at the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné; finishing fifth on stage 17 of this year’s Tour; and winning the final stage of the Dauphiné in 2013.

“Alessandro brings another sharp edge to our team’s bag of tools,” said Jim Ochowicz, the U.S.-registered team’s president and general manager. “He is an aggressive rider with multiple skills, but we are especially excited about his skills in the mountains.”

The team did not announce the duration of his contract.

De Marchi said he looks forward to playing a supporting role.

“My goal is to work for the team,” he said. “I know that is my strength and my best quality. Of course, if there are some opportunities, then I will go after them — just as I did this year at the Tour. But my first goal is to work for the captain and the team leader.”
