Former world champion Mario Cipollini was hospitalized after colliding with a car while returning home from a training ride Friday morning in Lucca, Italy.
According to a report on TuttoBici, the retired Italian sprinter hit a car that turned in front of him, sending him sprawling into the tail-end of the car.
Cipollini’s right knee struck the car, causing injury, and he was transported to a local hospital. Doctors are expected to operate on his leg for ligament damage to his knee and quadriceps. According to early reports, he did not suffer any other serious injuries.
Officials from Cipollini USA, distributors of the Cipollini line in the United States, said he is scheduled to attend events at Eurobike and Interbike later this year.
