STRBSKE PLESO, Slovakia (AFP) — Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) won the fifth stage of his home Tour of Poland on a steep final climb with grades topping out at 16 percent. Petr Vakoc (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) held on to the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Majka, who won two stages in last month’s Tour de France and claimed the polka dot jersey as king of the mountains, pipped Spanish duo Benat Intxausti (Movistar) and Ion Izaguirre (Movistar) at the end of the rainy 190 kilometer stage through the mountains, from the Polish ski resort of Zakopane to Strbske Pleso, across the
border in Slovakia.

A sizable breakaway, sometimes as large as 16 riders, was off the front for most of the day. The leaders were eventually brought back to the peloton, about five kilometers before the finish.

With his stage win, Majka moves into second place on GC, one second behind Vakoc. Intxausti now sits third, five seconds behind the leader.

Friday’s sixth stage will be a 174km run to Bukovina Tatrzanska. The seven-day stage race concludes on Saturday with an individual time trial in Krakow.
