American Ben King broke his fibula, one of the two major bones in the lower leg, in a training crash on Thursday and underwent surgery early Friday. The 26-year-old Cannondale Pro Cycling rider was on Carters Mountain south of Charlottesville, Virginia at the time of the crash.

King Tweeted Friday that his surgery was successful.

The Virginia native, who lives in Italy during the race season, represented the United States at the Richmond world championships in October and won an elite national championship in 2010. He raced the Tour de France in 2014 and won a stage of Criterium International last season.
