Aussie TT champ Garfoot wins Santos Women’s Tour

Katrin Garfoot has come into 2016 swinging, first winning Australian time trial championships, and then continuing her run of good form to claim the overall title at the Santos Women’s Tour in Australia Tuesday. And the 34-year-old Orica-AIS rider’s victory was emphatic — she won the first stage of the four-day race and never relinquished the lead.

She entered Tuesday’s Victoria Park criterium in the lead but on equal time with three other riders: Hytec’s Lauren Kitchen, American Shelley Olds of Cylance, and Danielle King (Wiggle-High5). However, Orica’s sprint train was prepared to defend its lead in its home race. Though High5’s Kimberley Wells won the day, Garfoot claimed third, behind Wiggle’s Annette Edmondson. Olds was fourth, while King and Kitchen managed to cross the line inside the top 10.

“I was nervous at the beginning, not just at the end,” Garfoot said. “I was confident I could sprint after the last two days; I just wasn’t sure how I could sprint in a bunch with so many strong sprinters rubbing shoulders and pushing each other around like dominos. It strung out towards the back end, which probably suited me.

“The team just worked so hard together this week. Without them, I couldn’t have done anything like that. I’m not a sprinter but I just followed the good wheels, and they got me to where I needed to be and then just tried to do my best.”
