Gaviria wins stage 3 in Provence, Voeckler claims overall

Etixx – Quick-Step’s talented young sprinter, Fernando Gaviria, claimed his second victory of 2016 in the third and final stage of Le Tour de la Provence Thursday in Marseille, France. The 21-year-old Columbian beat BMC’s Danilo Wyss at the end of a 171-kilometer race. Romain Feillu (HP BTP — Auber93) finished third.

“This victory bodes well for the track worlds, in London,” Gaviria said. “When I left Colombia, I didn’t know where I was with my condition, but in this race, I got a satisfying answer. I’m eager to take it to the track and see what happens there. After the worlds, I will return to the road and continue working hard, to help the team get other good results”

Frenchman Thomas Voeckler wrapped up the overall title Thursday. The Direct Energie rider seized the overall lead Tuesday with a solo win and never relinquished the leader’s jersey. Etixx – Quick-Step’s Petr Vakoc was second, and Voeckler’s teammate, Lilian Calmejane, rounded out the GC podium in third.
