Last weekend saw the opening event of the new World Cycling League in Carson, California at the VELO Sports Center. The event included 42 elite track cyclists from 12 countries, who competed in a six-team, three-session format. Each team was comprised of four men and three women, and they raced for points in a 12-event format.

“This really is the future of cycling. It’s entertainment for a new generation with a shorter attention span,” said Pennsylvania Lightning ambassador Fred Rodriguez, whose team won the event. Shimano executive and former racer Wayne Stetina echoed Rodriguez’s sentiments: “It was a great and entertaining format. No real downtime. The spectators really seemed to respond to it. It was an electric atmosphere. This was a fun night of real good racing.”
