Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, California)
Jimmy Watkins began cycling to keep in shape for his job as a firefighter. A talented athlete that was a Junior Olympian sprinter in fourth grade, he is a full-time hotshot in Bakersfield, California.
Watkins’ resume contains a string of top-three finishes. Additionally, he owns three — yes, three — national titles from 2008 alone, in the keirin, individual sprint, and team sprint events, which he topped off with a national team sprint title in 2010.
The 212-pound Watkins has accomplished all of this despite his obligations as a firefighter, husband, and, as of 2010, a father.
Watkins represented the U.S. in the 2012 world championships, the 2011-12 World Cup and the 2009 Pan-American Championships, and this will be his first Olympics.
